YNAB, Mint and Monarch alternatives: when to switch and to what
Updated 28 October 2026
People leave a budgeting app for a reason — price, currencies, too much or too little automation, or the app closing. Find your reason below; each points to a different kind of alternative.
If you are coming from Mint
Intuit shut Mint down on March 23, 2024 and pointed users to Credit Karma. Credit Karma is a different product, so many former Mint users look for an app that still does monthly budgeting and categories.
YNAB vs Monarch in one paragraph
YNAB is a method first: give every dollar a job, enter transactions as they happen (bank import is optional), $14.99 a month or $109 a year after a 34-day trial (ynab.com). Monarch is automation first: connect your accounts and let it categorise. Both work in one currency — YNAB recommends a separate plan for each currency, and Monarch does not convert between currencies.
Pick the alternative by your reason
- “I want it to import from my bank automatically” — Monarch Money, Copilot Money (US banks), Rocket Money (US banks).
- “I want envelope budgeting for free” — Goodbudget’s free plan.
- “My money is in several currencies” — Wallet or Spendee (your own rate possible), Toshl or Lunch Money (automatic rates), Fintrek (your own rate, each currency kept separately).
- “Typing every purchase is why I quit” — tracking by chat or voice, like Fintrek in Telegram.
- “I want no app at all” — a free spreadsheet: the Fintrek budget template.
Features were checked on each app’s official site and store listing in October 2026. Apps change — check the current details on their sites before you decide.
Where Fintrek is a good YNAB or Mint alternative
Fintrek suits you if you live or travel between countries, keep money in several currencies (including USDT), and want recording to take one message. You say “coffee 4 dollars” or “changed 100 dollars to 4100 lira” in Telegram, confirm, and it is recorded at your rate. Budgets with plan vs actual, debts with partial repayments, a report on the 1st, and export to a filled-in Excel template.
Where Fintrek is not the right fit: it does not import from banks automatically (you record by voice or text, or import a statement file), it has no shared budget for couples yet, it needs Telegram, and after the free 30 days it is a paid subscription ($4.99 a month or $49 a year). Export of your data always stays free.
Questions
What is the best free YNAB alternative?
For envelope-style budgeting, Goodbudget has a free plan; for simple manual tracking, Monefy, Spendee or Wallet have free plans. A free spreadsheet template is another option.
What replaced Mint?
Intuit moved Mint users to Credit Karma when Mint closed on March 23, 2024. People who want budgeting often switch to Monarch, YNAB or another budgeting app.
Monarch vs YNAB: which is better?
YNAB if you want a hands-on method and enter transactions yourself; Monarch if you want automatic bank sync. Neither handles several currencies in one plan.
Is there a YNAB alternative for multiple currencies?
Yes: Wallet, Spendee, Toshl, Lunch Money and Fintrek handle several currencies; Fintrek uses the exchange rate you actually got.
