Best free budgeting apps: what you really get for free
Updated 28 October 2026
“Free” means different things: a free plan with limits, a free trial, or an app that is free and supported another way. Here is what you actually get, and when a free spreadsheet template beats an app.
Free plans worth knowing
- Goodbudget — free plan for envelope budgeting with a limited number of envelopes; bank import is paid.
- EveryDollar — a free version for manual zero-based budgeting; bank connection is in Premium.
- Spendee — free Basic plan for manual tracking; bank sync and more wallets are paid. Supports several currencies.
- Wallet (BudgetBakers) — free plan for manual tracking; bank sync is in Premium. Supports several currencies with your own rate.
- Monefy — free core app for quick manual tracking, no bank login.
- Money Lover — free to use, with paid extras.
Features were checked on each app’s official site and store listing in October 2026. Apps change — check the current details on their sites before you decide.
Free trials are not free plans
Many well-known apps have a trial and then require a subscription — YNAB, for example, gives 34 days free and then costs $14.99 a month or $109 a year (ynab.com). Trials are a good way to test a method, but plan for what happens on day 35.
When a free template is the better choice
If you want full control, no account and no subscription, a spreadsheet is free forever. Our free budget template for Excel and Google Sheets has transactions, categories with a plan, your own exchange rates and a monthly summary with charts. Its only weak spot is typing every purchase — see how to make a budget spreadsheet.
Where Fintrek fits
Fintrek is not a free app: the first 30 days are free with everything included, then it is $4.99 a month or $49 a year. What stays free forever is your data: viewing, reports and export — including the same Excel template filled with all your records. If you stop paying, nothing you recorded is taken away.
It is worth a try if typing is what kills your budgets: you record in Telegram by voice or text, in any currency, at your own rate.
Questions
What is the best free budgeting app?
It depends on your method: Goodbudget for envelopes, EveryDollar for zero-based budgeting, Spendee or Wallet if you need several currencies, Monefy for the simplest manual tracking.
Are free budgeting apps safe?
Check what the free plan asks for. Manual-entry apps do not need your bank login; bank-sync features share access with a connection provider.
Is there a free budget template instead of an app?
Yes — the Fintrek budget template is free for Excel and Google Sheets, with no sign-up.
Is Fintrek free?
The first 30 days are free; then it is a subscription. Viewing, reports and export of your data are always free.
